There is one thing in this story that is based on a very obscure bit of Legends material that I suspect people won’t spot. It’s so obscure that even long term Star Wars fans might not spot it and even then they probably won’t notice it until the end, because it’s a complete reimagining of a concept. I mean, to stress, it’s so obscure that I 100 percent don’t expect people to get what I’m building on. It’s just a good idea we’re giving a 21st century spin on. I expect readers to experience it just as this excellent thing that happens. -- Kieron Gillen

Too many first issues think it's enough to tell you who the characters are, and the immediate situation, but assume you already know the world, the context, the overall foundation. Particularly at Marvel and DC. A first issue that walks you in to the world, like a good novel or movie, that tries to be a foundation, rather than just the next chapter, feels like a rarity these days, all too sadly. [...] Too many first issues, though, are like "Here's the names and powers, you know the drill." Well, no, maybe we don't. Walk us in, give us a place to stand, a sense of the setting, the foundation. -- Kurt Busiek

Space Riders - Galaxy of Brutality #1

"Rangel Jr. Is my kind of guy, with a narrative style that would sit snuggly in between heavy metal and any film Kurt Russell was the star of in the 80s. It’s over-the-top, with cheesy dialogue and the unshakable feeling that this was a kid that really knew how to play with his toys. G.I. Joe definitely met the Transformers in this guy’s head, if you know what I’m saying?"

After long reflection, I couldn't turn down the invitation to renovate the house that Jim Lee built, and refit its unique combination of cosmic paranoia and paramilitary conspiracy for the post-political space madness of the twenty-teens. Looking back to look forward. -- Warren Ellis

My inspiration for the new Tarzan series with Dynamite is Jason and the Argonauts, but the ship is a Martian flyer and the crew is drawn from the entire sprawling [Edgar Rice Burroughs] universe. Look for Jane, Korak, Meriam, John Carter, Dejah Thoris, Jason Gridley, David Innes, the Mucker, the man/monster from Vat 13, the Oskaloosa Kid, the Rider, La of Opar, and even some obscure ones. They'll go to lost worlds, inner worlds, distant worlds, and maybe even Beyond the Farthest Star. I told myself, if I ever get the chance to play in the ERB sandbox, I'm going to truly wallow in it. - Bill Willingham

It's a four-issue mini, a sequel to Valiant's previous Britannia.

It opened some time before that'd ended, on a house in Rome.

A man drinking wine called for one of his slaves. She came, bearing a jug.

He and his friend smiled eagerly. )

"Christoper Priest is an amazing guy whose work I’ve admired for a long time, and he has an incredibly keen take on how Deathstroke works. At any point whether there was a doubt how to handle things, I would talk to him and we would sort of make it work because he had a very, very clear view of the way things would work. I think ultimately it could have been much harder to do, but it was a real pleasure to do because we got in step with each other and understood how he operated. I think this is in terms of villains pulling shocks and surprises, the idea that he’s almost not operating as a villain, he’s coming to them almost more openly than he’s ever done before and say I’ve got a problem that I wish to solve and you can help me do it makes it, I think that’s why it’s a very compelling story." - Dan Abnett
